If instead I add a Remote Account (which Sourcetree tells me makes cloning even easier (!)), search for my repository and then select Clone, it will clone the supermodule, but fail on the submodule with the error "fatal: error in sideband demultiplexer" This can introduce other issues of compatibility, but fixed the problem in question for me and works fine for now. This switches SourceTree from using the embedded Git to using system Git. In Sourcetree if I take the repository URL that is hosted in Bitbucket which looks select Clone, add in the URL, choose Advanced Options and select Recurse Submodules - this will clone successfully. I use SourceTree and the above responses didnt help on their own, until I clicked SourceTree -> Tools -> Options -> Git -> Git Version -> System. ![]() Enter the URL to your repository and the path to your local folder.
